Promoting Frugality

Will Macy's Going Local Help Their PR Problem?
Much as you are an east coast transplant to Chicago, I am one to Seattle, now a resident for a dozen years. In that time, I've seen our city's venerable "Bon Marche" (owned by Federated Stores) become "Bon-Macy's", now "Macy's". That loud sucking sound I hear is the entire northwest corporate entity being vacuumed into its Bay-area mothership void. With seven hundred or so corporate jobs cut, Seattle's Macy's is nothing more than a satellite, a sad monument to corporate absorption of long-standing community identity. Luckily, the Nordstroms beacon continues to burn bright.

Our century old Bon Marche was a cornerstone establishment, it's Thanksgiving Day parade a cold fall day destination for city dwellers, punctuated by Santa's arrival at the front door. It persists, but without the holiday cheer of old. Bon-sponsored events thrown at our zoo or throughout the region spoke of community support and involvement. Now, we have a mediocre department store with bad customer service and poor merchandise. I have entered the downtown Macy's once since the name change and was horrified by it's decline, both in customer experience and product. Never again shall I set foot in that store.
