Courts remands teenage settler over Gaza attack

An Israeli court has remanded an 18-year-old Jewish settler in custody for allegedly taking part in an attempt to lynch a Palestinian teenager in the Gaza Strip last week.

The attack was caught by television cameras and prompted a wave of outrage from Israelis.

Shimson Sitreen was arrested by police in Jerusalem four days after the attack on Palestinian teenager Hilal al-Majaida.

Television footage shows a group of young settlers kicking and hitting the 16-year-old Majaida in the head with stones while he lay on the ground unconscious.

The mob then allegedly tried to lynch the badly wounded Palestinian, who was saved by Israeli soldiers and journalists.

Eighteen-year-old Sitreen has been remanded in custody by an Israeli court.

Opinion polls conducted after the attack show public support for the Gaza disengagement has risen significantly in response to the violence.
