Extraordinary Abilities Emerge
New York City:
Peter dreams of flying and even mentions this to people close to him but they don't take him seriously.
Peter is Charles Deveaux's nurse, and Deveaux's daughter, Simone, tells Peter that her father thinks of Peter as a son.
India:
Professor Mohinder Suresh is lecturing in Madras, India, on the topic of "Man and Evolution" and he suggests that cockroaches may be more evolved than man...he is interrupted by a man and dismisses his class. The man tells him the limited details about Chandra Suresh's death in New York City, so Mohinder heads to his father's apartment in India to gather his research papers. In the apartment, he finds a file named "Genesis," a cassette tape, and a large world map that seems connected with the file and Chandra's research. Mohinder is interrupted in this, too, so he snaps a photo of the map, removes the pin from the New York City location on the map, and clears out before he is found in the apartment.
Las Vegas:
Niki Sanders is using her garage for an Internet striptease studio, and disconnects a viewer 'huggerz69' from her 'show,' claiming that time is up. When she goes to get her son (Micah) up and ready for school, she finds him already set to go. The doorbell rings and she tells Micah to grab his things and wait by the back door. Two thugs are at the door, so Niki rushes Micah out the back door and narrowly escapes a confrontation as the two men bust down the front door.
Texas:
In Odessa, a teenaged girl is climbing about 80 feet to the top of a metal structure while a boy films her actions. She lets herself fall from the structure and the boy, Zach, runs to help her when she just stands up. She gives her name as "Claire Bennet" and says into the camera that this is her sixth 'attempt.'
New York City:
Peter tries to talk to brother, Nathan, about the dreams, but his brother has been busy at his campaign headquarters - busy with business, busy with phone calls with a Mr. Linderman, and other things, so he really doesn't have time for Peter's stories. Nathan receives a phone call saying their mother has been arrested for shoplifting (she stole socks).
Japan:
In Tokyo, Hiro Nakamura is at work, staring at a clock on his desk and after intense concentration on Hiro's part, the clock's second hand moves backward one tick, causing Hiro to shout, "Yatta!" ("I Did It!"). He tells friend and co-worker, Ando Masahashi that he just broke the 'space time continuum' but Ando just thinks Hiro is nutty. Ando goes back to what he was doing which was watching a video onscreen of Niki's striptease.

Niki speaks with the principal at her son's private school. The institution is turning him out because 3 of Niki's payment cheques have bounced. She has a hissyfit on the principal and catches her reflection on her way out of the school, and tells her reflection to leave her alone.
Texas:
Zach and Claire pass by an emergency situation where a train has derailed. There is fire everywhere and firefighters are still trying to locate people and pull them to safety. Claire tells Zach to roll with the film and she dashes into the fire from a point where nobody is paying attention and she is not seen. She is seen, however, once she pulls a man out of the fire. A firefighter runs to help her but, amazingly, finds her completely untouched by the fire. Claire runs off before the firefighter can react further or question her.
New York City:
Mohinder makes it to his late father's apartment and finds it overturned and all messed up. He rents the apartment and there is another map in the apartment and another cassette tape - this time, labeled 'Sylar.' He uses his photo of the map from the India location - to sort out the map in the New York City apartment.
Manhattan:
Isaac Mendez is detroying paintings. His artwork. When his girlfriend, Simone Deveaux arrives and tries to stop him, he claims he was high on heroin when he did those paintings and compares some of the artwork with newspaper headlines and pictures, which directly correspond with each other. He says something is very wrong and kicks Simone out. A train wreck displays on the television news and Isaac glances at a matching picture of a train wreck in his paintings.
New York City:
Nathan and Peter try to deal with the situation with their mother and they also argue about Nathan offering Peter a job, plainly just to make himself look good regarding his political campaigning...Peter leaves in a huff, saying he doesn't want Nathan's pity. He leaves in a taxi...
...the taxicab is driven by Mohinder...
Peter and Mohinder exchange some philosophical comments, including limited conversation about being 'special.' During the ride, Peter has noticed a solar eclipse in the sky...
Las Vegas:
Niki returns home - notices the solar eclipse - but also notes that the two thugs are still at her place. She tries to depart again but is caught. The thugs take her to the garage and try to force her to do a striptease for them...when she refuses, they start to hit her and she blacks out.
Japan:
Ando teases Hiro about his 'powers' and cracks jokes at Hiros expense making comparisons between Hiro and Star Trek trivia. They go to unwind after work at a bar, where Ando is humoring Hiro, allowing him to try and explain details about a certain theory of space-time continuum. Finally Ando makes jokes again, telling Hiro to do something useful with his powers and teleport into the ladies' room. When Ando gets up to get more drinks, Hiro teleports...into the ladies' washroom.
Las Vegas:
Niki awakens from her blackout - to find her place completely trashed and hears a message from Micah on the answering machine...she is many hours late for picking Micah up and as she looks around, she finds the thugs dead...
New York City
Peter receives a call from Simone while he is still in the taxi, so Mohinder drives Peter to the Deveaux's place, and Peter pays the cabbie...
...a man hops in the taxi, asking to go to JFK Airport. As the man talks, he makes Mohinder nervous by seeming to know too much about a Professor Suresh from India, etc. Mohinder stops the taxi suddenly and runs away.
Japan:
Hiro is tossed out of the ladies' room and out of the club...Ando makes more 'Star Trek' jokes and calls Hiro, "Super Hiro."
Texas:
Claire is helping her mother with kitchen chores and drops her ring in the sink, where the mechanical garbage disposal is turned on. She retrieves her ring, also mangling her hand but it regenerates...she hides this from her mom while her hand is healing, and this is interrupted by her father's arrival home from work...
...Claire's dad appears to be the man from the taxi who was talking to Mohinder about knowing another Professor Suresh...
Japan:
Hiro is on a train and starts concentrating hard about 'time.' A clock near him shows 11:43, and then changes to 1:00 while Hiro is concentrating. Hiro opens his eyes and is still on the train for a split second, but then he is looking at New York City, standing right in Times Square. He raises his hands and yells, "Yatta! Hello New York!"
Manhattan:
Peter and Simone find Isaac unconscious - overdosed - in his apartment. Peter glances around, noticing Isaac's odd artwork, including a picture of Peter flying...Isaac barely regains consciousness, enough to say, "We have to stop it." On the floor, a massive explosion over New York City was painted before Isaac managed to overdose, and this painting on the floor leaves Peter and Simone speechless.
New York City:
Nathan is talking on his cellphone from an alleyway. A phone smashes on the ground near him, having fallen from above. When Nathan looks up, it is to see Peter at the top of a building. Nathan tries to talk Peter down but instead, Peter jumps.
As Peter is plumetting downward, Nathan raises up and catches him, however, Nathan loses his grip on Peter...who starts to fall again.
