It can be daunting figuring out what you need to do to get ready for the Grace Hopper Celebration. Not only do you have to think about getting there, but you also want to make sure you don’t forget anything important. Well, to help you do that, we have come up with a step by step guide for what you need to do so that once GHC arrives, you’ll have everything you need and nothing to stress about!
As Soon As You Register:
• Book your hotel room- The 2008 Grace Hopper Celebration will be taking place in beautiful Keystone, Colorado this year. Set in the magnificent Rocky Mountains, this resort has much to offer including a newly renovated spa, outdoor heated pools, cardio rooms, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, wireless internet access, and a business center. All guests will be staying in condominiums in one of Keystone’s six neighborhoods. For more information about lodging, visit their [website].. Don’t forget, the deadline to book your room at Keystone is August 27.
• Submit your resume- Make sure to get your resume ready to be uploaded into our [resume database]. Fill out an [online form] http://gracehopper.org/2008/resumes/index.html and companies will be able to review your resume till December. You can set up interviews for jobs or internships right at GHC!
• Sign Up for the CONNECT Project- One of the key aspects of the Grace Hopper Celebration is that of networking. The [CONNECT] project is a free tool that helps you set goals for networking before getting to the event and then helps you along the way. All you need to do is fill out a [form] . The badge you receive at the Conference will have a special barcode on it. When you meet someone whose information you would like to have in the future, you just find a CONNECT SCANNER who will then scan both of your badges. Each night during GHC you will receive emails about how far you have come along in meeting your goals. In addition, the information of everyone you networked with will be sent to you.
In September:
• Get the essentials- Start digging through your closet for all those fall and winter clothes and accessories, since you’ll need them in Keystone. With temperatures in the day averaging around 63.7 °F / 17.6 °C and 26.8 °F / -2.9 °C at night, it is a good idea to make sure you have all those essentials- warms coats, sweaters, scarves, gloves, etc.
• Keep checking the website- Make sure to keep checking our [website] for the latest information about GHC. Here you can also look up the [schedule] of events and plan which workshops you will want to attend. From learning how to [recession proof your career] by improving your skills in networking to improving your resume (resume workshop link), you will have many options to choose from.
• Check out the sponsors- Take a look at our list of [sponsors and academic underwriters] to get an idea of whom would like to meet with at GHC.
One Week Away:
• Print copies of your resume- Not only will you need you plenty of resume copies if you have already scheduled interviews at GHC, but you will also need them for the amazing Resume Workshop sponsored by Cisco taking place on October 1st. The resume workshop will be staffed by seasoned academics and industry professionals who will be there to evaluate your resume and make recommendations on what can be improved. Experts will be available to look at everything from intern resumes, PhD CV’s, entry level and mid-career level resumes. This is a great way to get useful opinions on how to better present your resume to future employers and for internal positions.
• Start Packing! - Getting a head start on packing won’t be difficult when you check out our article on “What You Should Bring to Keystone” in our September newsletter. There you will find a list of necessities that you don’t want to be without at this year’s GHC.
